What to do and which places to visit in Alentejo

Some suggestions

Marvão

Fortified medieval village, candidate to World Heritage. The XIII century castle has an amazing view over the region.

Tips:ask for a cheese board and a glass of wine at sunset; visit local craft stores; have dinner at Mil Homens, if you are a true local food lover.

Arraiolos

Medieval castle village (“Paço dos Alcaides”), famous by its carpets, a tradition that started during the Arabic occupation and was subsequently influenced by the Persians during the Discoveries. These carpets can be seen in some of the most noble and ancient Portuguese houses and palaces.

Monsaraz

One of the most beautiful, fortified Portuguese villages, surrounded by the Alentejo plain lands and by the biggest European artificial lake (Albufeira do Alqueva). Within its limits, one may find Paleolithic, Roman, Visigoths and Muslims archeological remains. The village was conquered in 1167 by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. I tis especially known for the quality of its ceramics, blankets and rugs (see Olaria de São Pedro de Corval).

Tips:have a glass of wine with a nice view at Xarez; visit local craft stores and have dinner at Taverna os Templários.

Redondo

This village has hundreds of years of history when it comes to its ceramics, which was particularly inspired by the Romans.

Tips: Clay Museum.

Évora

This is a museum city. Its historical centre was qualified as World Heritage by UNESCO.

Tips:visit the Bones Chapel (yes, it is made of human bones), have an expresso at Praça do Giraldo, visit a store where the famous Alentejo coats (capote alentejano) are made (Capote's Emotion), have dinner at Fialho.

Why not go and discover it by yourselves?

Alentejo is famous for its wonderful wines and its rich gastronomy. If you are in the mood and have the time, we suggest you grab your car and visit the several wine producers in the region, some of which also have excellent restaurants. A few suggestions:
